4.8.07 - USDGC Roc Info & Contest Announcement

Official Public Release
Tuesday, April 10th - 2:00pm Eastern

Before the rush to order the remaining USDGC Rocs begins, I thought it would be helpful to take a closer look at what discs are still available. The whole Roc fundraising process can change a great deal from one year to the next, and this year is VERY different from the last few.

One of the things especially important to understand is the difference between the terms “X-out” and “Factory Second”. True X-outs are discs that were marked with a handwritten “X” at the time they were produced. X-outs were considered by the molder to be less than perfect, usually due to a visible blemish in the plastic.

If you are looking for discs to throw, as opposed to collect, X-outs are definitely something to consider. X-outs that cannot be guaranteed to fly like their non-cosmetically challenged siblings never leave the warehouse. They are easy to spot and are destroyed. This is true among all major manufacturers.

“Factory Seconds” is a broader category as it can include discs that are X-outs (straight from the manufacturer), or discs that were damaged somewhere along the line. It can also include “double stamps” though, which is where it gets good for those of us with leaner budgets.

Double stamps are discs where the hot stamp (either stock or custom) simply did not take. It the artwork drops out, even in the slightest sense, the disc is set aside. Those discs are structurally perfect; they just end up with multiple hot stamps and therefore are generally sold at a reduced price.

The collector run of 07 USDGC Rocs was limited to exactly 3000 discs. Every disc in the collector run has been registered and packaged. They are a presumably near perfect item for today’s high dollar collectors.

The collector run however does not include every single disc from the overall run. We handpicked from the entire run to create specific categories for the collector market. This left some very tasty, non X-outs that we have come to refer to around the shop as simply, the “throwers”.

Most of the discs available Tuesday, even though classified as “Factory Seconds”, are perfect from a molding standpoint. Each disc received multiple hot stamps to differentiate them from the collector run. Every one has at least 2 stamps, some have 3, 4 or even more. In some cases, great attention was paid to create a pretty hip look, very unique from any others.

At $18.99, this is where it’s at if you plan to add these to your bag. There are plenty of 180s, and almost everything else is over 175. This is true in both Champion and Star.

To spice things up a bit, and to reward you for reading all of this, we are going to put into play a USDGC golden ticket. The Loose Cannon invitation so to speak…

On the final day of hot stamping, one Roc in particular was adorned with 9 of the coveted Cannon stamps. That’s correct, nine, in honor of what will be the ninth running of the US Championship. This special disc will be shipped out randomly as part of the factory second orders.

Whoever receives the 9 Cannon Roc will be entitled to compete in the 2007 US Championship at Winthrop. To sweeten the deal even further, your room at the tournament hotel will be covered for all nights of competition. All you will need to do is register, pay your entry fee, and bring your A game.

So good luck, and thank you supporting the US Championship.

Cheers,

J.Poole
