4.20.07 - Interview with Avery Jenkins
If you were to enter a distance competition today, what discs would you throw?
During the Worlds and USDGC distance contests I was throwing mostly Star TeeRex and Star Orcs because of their speed and predictable stability. I like to throw stable drivers because they are capable handling a lot of torque and their stability allows you to get over on them during a 360 turnaround. They may actually be a little too stable to be thrown for maximum distance because they snap back before they are able to get that late forward push and glide. I believe that Star Wraiths are my distance disc of choice because they possess that high-speed glide into the turn and push forward without finishing to hard at the end of their flight.
Are there discs you would choose for pure distance, but not necessarily for golf?
I would say that Star Wraiths are a great disc for pure distance, even though I do not carry one in the bag for rounds of golf. They are an amazing high-speed distance discs that carry further then any disc than I have ever thrown. If you haven’t thrown one, you are definitely missing out.
How ridiculous is it that David Wiggins Jr. (who is 11) just set the distance record for his age group at 484 feet?
That is truly an amazing feat; I would love to see him throw again out in the distance field. He has a great chance to become one of the better distance throwers in the country as he continues to grow and by developing a flawless technique. I think that this sport needs to support these up and coming young golfers who possess natural ability to throw a disc. They really have a chance to bring this sport to another level; it will be a great thing to witness.
Lots of pros have switched to a backpack style golf bag this year. Is that just a fashion statement, or are pros really benefiting from the different set up?
Well, I think that the backpack style golf bag is more beneficial to the golfer as opposed to being an actual fashion statement. It allows the weight of the golf bag to be distributed equally across the back and shoulders. It does not place added strain or pull on just one shoulder as provided by the single strap. The single strap setup can definitely cause some fatigue to those who plan on playing multiple rounds of golf while carrying lots of discs. I highly recommend getting a pair of the Phenix Disc Sports - Quadshocks to minimize fatigue and to reduce possible back and shoulder strain.
If you could be sponsored by any company in the world, who would it be?
I am currently sponsored by a bunch of great disc golf related companies. I would love to be sponsored by company outside of the sport that could provide me with more than just product. I am looking to the future of the sport when disc golf athletes will be supported be compensated for more then just tournament travel and entry expenses. To be honest, I would love to be sponsored by Nike. I really like their products from all their shoes to their great variety of athletic clothing. They are a multi-billion dollar company that provides their sponsored players with best products engineered to the exact specifications of championship athletes.
What do you to chill out from golf and school work?
I wish that I actually had time to chill out during this time of the year; this is definitely one of my busiest terms at school along with the disc golf season being on full tilt. I am constantly doing something that relates to one of the two on any given day. I try to escape from the stress of life by either going to the gym to work out or going to the fields to throw with my roommate. It enables me to unwind from the busy day along with getting in hours of great training.
You and Feldberg are often referred to as Davery. Has Dave really assimilated you, and if so, how has your life changed since that all went down?
Sure, we are a strongly bonded team that has been able to do what only very few people have been capable of doing for the past 6 years, and that is to make a living playing disc golf. I think that we a lot from each other from the multiple issues that we face in disc golf to the issues that are dealt with in life in general. We are very supportive of each other’s accomplishments and we provide a great sense of motivation for each other. Because of that we are solely responsible for each other becoming great players throughout the past couple of years. We have been traveling the world and have been to almost every state in the country, we have seen some courses in our time. We have definitely been through a lot together and we continue grow as great friends.
