5.2.07 - Innova’s “New” DX Ontario Roc
The hottest Innova disc on the market right now is not a distance driver (which is generally the case) but an old classic brought back to life. The Ontario mold Roc has been a favorite of players for many years and is now back in full force.
Innova’s Dave Dunipace switched to the Rancho mold years ago and the Roc immediately became more overstable no matter which type of material. They were noticeably more stable right out of the box which was a good thing for power players. As these discs wore in they just got better and better.
“We switched to the Rancho Roc to make it more reliable in the wind. The low speed over stability was an unfortunate by product, not something we were looking for. Ontarios are better in wooded situations, for turnovers and finesse shots. Ranchos are better in the wind and for power shots.” – D. Dunipace
If you are a newer player who has perhaps not thrown anything other than a Rancho, you should seriously consider giving the Ontario a try. It is unlikely you will be disappointed. They are noticeably less stable at lower speeds helping them keep a very straight line.
Tip 1: To determine the mold, simply look at the engraving on the underside of the disc. Rocs will either say Rancho, Ontario or San Marino.
Tip 2: If you have a San Marino you should be careful not lose it. They have not been in production for many years and will not be made again. San Marinos are often available from collectors but they always carry a hefty price tag.
