5.22.07 - “In the Bag” with Innova Staff (Peckham)

Here is the 4th installment of an “In the Bag” series with employees of Innova Disc Golf (Carolina). We thought it would be interesting to see what people threw, who had access to basically everything.

Matt Peckham, Art Director

Bag:

Revolution Back Pack. Great bag, holds too many, as you can see from my driver selection. I keep all the drivers in the bottom, and the mids and putters in the top. I also throw discs I’ve been playing with in the top till it gets full then resort the drivers to the bottom as needed.

Drivers:

Star Max: for extreme headwinds
Champion TeeRex X: experimental, not as stable as my Star TeeRex
Star TeeRex: go to stable driver, awesome disc
Star Wraith (newer): go to distance driver, hyzer flip into long glides, can outdistance anthing
Star Wraith (beat): a great finesse driver, turnovers, maximum D in crosswinds and tail winds
First run Champion Starfire X: utility driver, getting less use these days as it gets a bit flippy
Champion Monster X: 167ish, thumbers and spike hyzers, also good for sidearms
Champion Orc: 160g, sidearms, big anhyzers, including spike anhyzers, this disc in this weight goes a long way
Champion Roadrunner: rollers (seldom to rare that I throw them), some thumbers in the woods, finesse drives and turnovers

Fairway:

Star Leopard: straight shots
Champion Leopard: used to be for straight, now for slight turnovers mainly
Star TL: great disc, don’t use it nearly enough, straight with good predictable fade at the end, but not a skipper

Mid-range:

Star Shark: Not getting a lot of use right now, but still there for windy shots or high hyzers
Special Blend Roc: Straight hyzers. Good consistent, feels right in the hand
Champion Glow Coyote: Owww-oooooooooooooo! This thing is like a driver. It’ll go for ever. Straight, hyzer or anhyzer, a very versatile disc. Mama like.
Champion (milky) Stingray: My go to woods disc. If I need to hit a gap, I throw it. It’s as straight as they get with little to no fade at the end. Hyzer flip, but only a little.
Star Stingray (blunt nose): Another awesome woods disc. About as straight as the Champion, sorta my backup, whichever feels right.

Putters:

Champion Aero: I LOVE this disc. I’ve had it for years, and it’s my first aero. It will probably be my last, except it’s grass green and I can see it getting lost in the middle of a fairway someday. Approaches and putts. I use it in the wind a lot. People say I’m crazy… maybe they are right. I also throw it on holes up to 350 feet. Yeah, that’s feet. These things go a mile if they have air under them, only for gentle gliding turnovers.
JK Aviar (3 time): My main putter and approach disc. I will throw it for drives under 300, but not too many. Don’t want to abuse it too much.
Aviar P&A: Currently a disc with a photo of my son at the beach in full color. Another putter, good for turnover approaches and drives. Starting to like the Aviar, I don’t throw small beads much.

Note: In a given round I will putt with each of these discs, usually equally. I haven’t ever developed a feel for any of them too much, or maybe I pull a random one out with the confidence that I can make that one do what I want. It works sometimes, others not. I guess practicing would help.
