6.1.07 - Interview with Brian Skinner, VA Open Winner

Brian Skinner, Chesapeke, VA
PDGA #16442
Winner of the 2007 Virginia Open A-Tier

What are the go to discs in your bag this spring?

Max – Definitely in the top of my bag, especially in the wind.

Wraith – Also a top choice. Excellent go to for distance.

Roc – Overall it’s my number one disc. I carry about 3 or 4 Rocs at all times.

Tee Bird - Go to disc along with the Wraith. Just super straight and predictable. I can trust it.

The Firebird has been a staple of top players for years. Why the Max over the Firebird?

The Max is a little more controllable for me. The Firebird is still in the bag, don’t get me wrong. In an extreme headwind the Firebird is still probably the disc I’d trust the most, mainly because I’ve been throwing it for a long time. I wouldn’t just pull it because I know the Firebird too well.

Any discs that are a little hard to handle?

I was throwing the TeeRex for awhile but I just felt they were a little too unpredictable for me. I think it’s a better disc for lower arm speeds. You want something to flip over a bit to get full on distance, but the TeeRex was just a little squirrly once it got over. Some would come back predictably, some wouldn’t.

Do you have a preference in material?

I throw mostly Star except for the TeeBird. I just still like Champion TeeBirds. They seem to have a little more glide, for me at least.

What’s shakin’ in the Hampton Roads Area?

We’re really pushing to keep getting new courses in the ground. That is pulling a lot of new people into the game. It’s very rewarding to watch to guys come up through the ranks and learn the game.

What’s your home course?

Bayville used to be. Now though, because it’s convenient to work, I’ve been playing Bennett’s Creek in Suffolk.

If a golfer comes to your area, what course should they definitely try to play?

New Quarter, the new course in Williamsburg. It’s a world class course, very fun, very fair. A lot of elevation change for that area of Virginia.

How does the Grange tournament scene compare to Winthrop?

The Grange is more of a laid back, cookout, hang out kind of thing. People there have known each other for a long time. The competition is still there, but overall it’s geared to be a fun time.

I was at the USDGC last year and it was awesome. That’s the prestigious, high class, more serious event. Everybody there wants to play the very best they can. It’s a different experience.

If you could only play one more round of golf, ever, where would you play?

The Grange in Spotsylvania. The Dark Side course has just got me.
