6.13.08 - US Doubles Update
Let’s start with the issue that probably caused the most questions, and deservedly so. The US Doubles event is NOT a major championship as the name may suggest. This competition will be more informal, geared towards providing USDGC competitors an important warm up for the actual US Championship. It will also provide a select number of amateur players an opportunity to test and compare their skills among the game’s elite.
Captains for the professional division will be based on results from the previous year’s USDGC. The top 24 finalists will have an opportunity to captain a team of their choice. Should someone be uninterested or unable to play, the 25th place finisher will have the opportunity. And so on, and so on.
Eligible pro captains are being contacted now and will be expected to accept or decline as quickly as possible. Confirmed captains do not need to name their partner at this time. We will wait until later in the summer to announce who is partnering with whom. Registration may take place as soon as captains are ready to declare. Captains looking to register should call the tournament office at 800.476.3968.
Captains for the amateur division will be determined via lottery. Since the field is so small, demand for positions will far exceed supply. The lottery format was chosen to provide a fair means of earning an opportunity to play, while generating revenue to support the event. All lottery proceeds benefit the amateur field exclusively.
Lottery tickets are currently available. They are $5.00 each and there is no limit to the number that can be purchased. All amateur participants must be current PDGA members, registered in an advanced level division or lower. PDGA professionals may not compete, regardless of current PDGA rating.
The drawing for amateur captains will take place on July 4th. This should allow plenty of time for winners to register and make travel arrangements. Winners will be posted at usdgc.com and will receive email notification. We will provide other interesting stats such as number of tickets sold, money raised, etc. Registration will open immediately.
Since amateurs will have paid for and won the chance to play, am captain status is transferable. Lottery winners may give their position to another player, or even sell/auction the position if they so choose. All teams must be registered no later than August 31.
In contrast, Pro Captain status is NOT transferable. Our tournament staff will contact a player who gains eligibility by someone else declining the opportunity.
We apologize that many of these details were not published clearly at first and that so many have had to wonder about the status of the event. Feel free to contact us with any other questions or concerns regarding US Doubles, or any other aspect of the USDGC.
