7.24.07 - Mace Man Tour Update

Interview with Brian Mace
Milwaukee, WI

You have been on a nice little run through Canada recently. What kinds of craziness did you run into up there?

It was a 4 week trip. I visited an NT event (Canadian Open) as a spectator, played in a B-tier at Camp Fortune outside of Ottawa, and knocked out 11 different Mace Man events, as well as a one day invitational at Bronte Creek in Burlington, Ontario. Between golf we wandered the streets of Toronto and Montreal looking for clubs, dinner, comedy, or whatever the city had to offer…

Is the Canadian disc golf scene really that much different from what you see around the US?

The scene isn’t really that different, but it seems Canadians in general just love to be outdoors. Especially in the warmer months. It’s like they are finally free from the extreme winter conditions and they are determined to enjoy every aspect of being outside to the fullest. Even things as simple as just having dinner on a patio. I don’t think the passion for disc golf knows any boundaries.

What is your favorite Canadian city?

It would have to be Toronto, although Montreal is putting up a pretty good fight. Toronto is so close, yet it seems so drastically different from the big cities I frequent in the United States. There are people from so many different places there. It’s a different cross section of the world.

Did you meet any hosers?

Of course. They’re on every corner. Eh?

You are one of the biggest hockey fans I know. Who is your favorite team and why?

The Dallas Stars of course. Because they came to Texas after I did, and Texas is where my love for the game was born. There was no team near where I grew up in Kansas to route for so I just wasn’t into hockey until it came to Texas.

Did you get into any good hockey arguments while in Canada?

Not really arguments, but lots of good conversations.

How are Canadians different when it comes to hockey?

They are raised on hockey. It is a part of their culture, sort of like football is here. They know hockey inside and out. The whole country supports hockey which is very different from the culture in the states. It’s just different.

We find ourselves here in Milwaukee this week for the Am Worlds. What are you doing here, actually?

I’m here to lend a hand wherever I can… and to hopefully sell a few things at the fly mart.

Where does the Mace Man Tour go from there?

North, towards Highbridge for the Pro Worlds. I’ve got a stops in Minocqua, Appleton and Stevens Point. There are others but still all up in this area.

Who is going to win the Pro Worlds this year?

Avery. Or one or two of twelve other disc chuckin’ yeahoos… Could be the banana, even. Why not?
