Interview with Andrew McGettigan, PDGA #32997

Winner of the USDGC Roc Golden Ticket

So how does it feel knowing that you’re headed to the big dance in less than 70 days?
It feels good. To go play a world class course with people at the top of their game. I also feel the luck, it got me this far so who knows maybe it will keep me in bounds at the tournament. The chance for greatness has been placed in front of me all I have to do step up and take advantage of it.

Are you doing anything different to ramp up your game?
Putting, putting, and some more putting. Focus has been turned to my short game. My back yard and basket have been under heavy fire since the arrival of the ice roc. Never three putt, play smart, lay up take your par, walk away.

How did you discover disc golf and how long have you been playing?
I played on a Ultimate Frisbee team in high school and a teammate turned me onto it. First course I ever played was Elver Park in Madison, WI. (Much love for the Midwest!) Eleven years later I find myself in Bend, OR. Still loving the sport and playing with my closest friends and local disc golf club the Hyzer Desert Rebels. I wouldn’t be in this position without them. Thank you!

Home course?
Mt. Bachelor in Bend, OR. Mountain golf baby! Check it out!

Favorite course?
Hard to say how about top three? Riverbend DGC at Milo McIver, Estacada, OR. Whistlers Bend, Roseburg, OR. And Vallarta-Ast. DGC at Tolken Creek, Deforest WI.

Can you tell us how you felt when you opened your order and discovered the “Golden Ticket” Roc?
Not even five seconds past before I was on top of my coffee table doing some indescribable victory dance as my buddy sits on the couch looking at me funny like whats the big deal. All I could say to him was, “Have you ever seen Charlie and the chocolate factory? Cause I just won the golden ticket!”

Has anyone tried to buy it from you yet?
I’ve had a few, but no offers that were acceptable for a disc of this value. If your a serious buyer contact JP through Zone Driven he’ll know how to reach me.

What other 3 players would make up your ideal foursome for your first ever round at Winthrop?
You probably expect me to drop some big names like Feldberg, Jenkins, and Schultz. But I’d rather meet them on the first card later in the tournament. I would prefer playing with some other Oregon locals who I see going far in this sport. Tyler Christiansen, Nate Sexton, and Tim Skellenger. Now thats a what I’m talking about!

A lot of people will probably be following this story come tournament time. Why should people be watching and rooting for the McGettimeister?
I think a lot of people like to root for the under dog. The sleeper that emerges from the Northwest to rattle some cages. The future is blind, the winner of the USDGC is completely up the air. I will play my heart out with a good attitude and a smile that can’t be beat. So if your in for a good time come check me out for couple holes while I Mcgetta get me some.

Thanks Andrew… We look forward to having you at Winthrop.
