7.31.07 - Pro Worlds Insider, with Billy Crump
Interview with Billy Crump
Pro Worlds – High Bridge, WI
It’s really different. It’s gorgeous. Primitive. We are about 20 minutes from the nearest grocery store for example, which isn’t too bad, it’s just different for a lot of folks to be this remote. It is real nice having 6 courses all right here on the same property. I’d say players staying at the resort are pretty much hooked up. With the exception of a cell signal of course.
Granite and Blueberry seem to be the favorites. Beautiful and challenging shots. Just incredibly scenic compared to the majority of city courses. Spending a week here playing disc golf is a real treat.
None really. Players are liking the courses across the board. The terrain is very challenging. Hilly, obviously, but also rocky and uneven. I know Barry (Schultz) has tweaked his ankle a few times just walking normally down a fairway. Nothing major, but you’ve got to pay attention to that sort of thing. It’s a long week of this.
The wind is up. That will definitely be a big factor this week if it keeps blowing. Players coming from windy areas may very well have a huge advantage.
I had long talk with Nate (Doss) last night. He seems very relaxed and confident. His Dad will be here with him too this week so I’m sure he’ll benefit from the extra support. Nate shouldn’t be too far down the leader board and he can definitely win it.
Stevie (Rico) and Josh Anthon just won doubles. They are pumped up and excited. I think they will do very well this week.
Ken (Climo) appears ready and was actually resting today. I don’t know if he’s got the eye he had years ago, but Ken can still win. And he knows it…
Dave (Feldberg) and Avery (Jenkins) didn’t get in here from Japan until late last night. They haven’t been able to practice yet so I would think that would put them a pretty big disadvantage. Not to mention the jet lag.
Lots of folks are talking about the wild life. Players have seen 400 to 500 pound black bears on the courses. They are all around. We are seeing foxes, hawks, eagles, and all sorts of unusual critters. You really have to keep your eyes and ears open. And you darn sure better stay away from a mama bear and her cubs.
John Ahart is here from Japan. That’s a great story. He was just saying earlier that this is his first Worlds in ten years as a player so lots of people will be watching to see how he’ll do this week.
Terry Miller just cashed in doubles with Mike Schweiger. That’s pretty huge after just running the Am Worlds last week. You can tell he is totally spent, yet he continues to golf. That’s just nuts.
Barry practiced today with Mark Lubbock. These two played doubles together and cashed. Barry did seem to lack fire a few days ago in my opinion, but today I sense Barry is starting to come alive. He has been relaxing, watching older videos, looking for little things in his game back when he knows he was really on. He’s already played two rounds of ball golf, getting to bed early, you know, sticking to his normal routine. He seems to be dialing things in as usual. I’d say he’s ready. I mean it’s Barry dude, come on. All he has to do is decide it’s go time.
