9.2.07 - Terry Miller, 2007 USDGC Competitor

terry_miller.jpg What is your favorite memory from past US Championships, as a spectator or competitor?
My first round ever at the USDGC was pretty memorable because of my foursome. I was in the 12:00 pm group with Ken Climo. I have played with Ken in the past but this stage is greater than any other. I don’t exactly recall the scores but Kenny might have beat me that round.

Do you have a special story on how you qualified?
I ran the 2007 Amateur World Disc Golf Championships in Milwaukee, WI during the last week of July. A few weeks prior the new executive director of the PDGA, Brian Graham, called me and told me that the PDGA had a special exemption set aside for a worthy person. Luckily he was referring to me and I gladly accepted the spot. One of my best friends then qualified at Pro Worlds and one of my assistant TD’s from Am Worlds was rewarded with the State Coordinator exemption that I gave him so I will be surrounded with my closest friends for this awesome experience.

What do you most look forward to when playing in this tournament?
Everyone says it and I’ll say it again … you are treated like PROFESSIONAL disc golfers when you are at this event. The little things ranging from player only areas to the free ice cream to the announcing of your name on hole 1. Everyone wishes that we were treated like this every weekend of the year. The USDGC has set the bar very high and every event in the country should be attempting to emulate what they do.

Additional thoughts:
I have been to the USDGC twice before this year. Once as a competitor in 2005 and once as a PDGA Marshal in 2006. Surprisingly, I’m not sure which year I had more fun. As an experienced TD and someone that promotes disc golf for a living it is truly amazing to have any part in this event. The staff, the players, and the facility all make this a world class experience. The more green you see during the week will probably equate to seeing more green at the end of the week!
