Disneyland? No, I’m going to the USDGC!!

I cant believe it’s USDGC time already! This will be my second year here at Winthrop but now I’m coming back as a competitor! Last year was the first time I made it down to Rock Hill. Burl had gotten a spot from the PDGA to play last year. The Spirit (our RV) was USDGC bound all I had to do was jump in. My plan was just to come down, hang out, and see this course everyones always talking about. We got down to Winthrop and played a couple of rounds to check out the course. The course was everything I expected and more; perfectly groomed greens, lots of OB rope, and well designed holes. I loved it! I wish i could play this course every day.

The day of the qualifier, I sat around watching people start and restart over and over again. I couldn’t believe the money they were spending and all the rounds they were playing for a chance to play in this event. It never really crossed my mind to try and qualify. I just came down to hang out. When Avery got to the course that day the first thing he says, “Get your bag and shoes on. You’re qualifying.” Like I said I didn’t really put much thought into it, but Avery was buying and caddying, so I was in!

I went out in a group with 3 other guys, and by hole 10 I was the last one left. They had all quit, and gone back to restart. I was really focused during the whole round and ended up with a solid score. I just did one single time around and shot around a 75, and just missed qualifying by a couple of strokes. I wasn’t too disappointed because I did my best. I got to caddy for Avery and party with everyone all week.

Now this year I’m coming into this event as a qualified player, and the only women representative. After playing a round today, I’m so excited to play it again! Being the only woman many are questioning if I have what it takes to cash. Juliana took last cash years ago, but besides that no one else has been able to do it. The pressure is on and it’s a great challenge ahead of me. I’ve just got to play my game and trust my discs. I know how far I can throw and what shots I’m capable of throwing. If I keep my shots inbounds and play smart I will be able to achieve this goal.

So I’m coming into tomorrows round with high hopes. I’m the one representing the disc golfing women this week, so I’ve got to bring it!
Wish me luck!
